    Film and TV

Richard Durrant - Film and Television Music Production

Richard has been writing and recording television and film music since 1991. His music can now be heard all over the world.

Telemagination, CTVC, BBC Schools TV (Focus, Numbertime, Watch, MusicMakers), Childsplay Prods, The Pier, Mentorn Films, First Film Foundation, Addictive TV, ZEF Prods, TransAtlantic, Roger Bolton Prods, Oceanbelt Ltd, Cinecontact Ltd, Image Makers, Ravenhead Films, Martin Bird Prods. For broadcast on BBC1, BBC2, BBC4, ITV, Ch4, Ch5 and Discovery.

As a composer, performer and record producer Richard has shown a particular interest in early muisc and contemporary music as well as European folk. He is a very fluent arranger and producer with an ability to conjure up most styles, periods or even countries and continents. He runs indie, acoustic label LongMan Records with his wife Louise and their studio is packed full of acoustic instruments, both ordinary and out of the ordinary. Unusually Richard can play all of them. He has been known to turn around a complex acoustic production in less time than most people would prepare a somewhat nastier sounding midi based demo. And, either in stripped down simplicity or lavish complexity, his productions always sound "expensive".

As a player Richard has been featured soloist on various tv ad campaigns including that British Airways tune, the launch of that Citroen car, that famous Whiter Shade of Pale Dulux ad to name but a few, playing guitars as well as mandolins, balalaika, ukulele, oud etc.... He even played all the bazoukis on Nana Maskouri's Greatest Hits album. Confusing for him, what with Eric Morecambe having died some years previously.

In the studio Richard has been known to use a tasteful blend of midi equipment, but most of his equipment is made out wood!

Children's Television - Richard Durrant is a big kid. The most important things in his life are guitars, banjos and messing about singing songs. His four children Rooney, Daisy, Django & Felix are his sternest critics - often locking him in his soundproof studio for days on end with no food...

Over the years Richard has written and sung lots of songs for BBC Education. Three separate series of the classic BBC TV series Numbertime, and two other BBC mainstays Watch and Music Makers, have made him a familiar voice to a generation of young children. Instrumental credits include Focus (BBC TV Ed) and PictureBox (Ch4 Ed).  Richard has also appeared as a presenter for MusicMakers (BBC TV Ed).

Mowzer - Cornish Film with score by Richard Durrant
    Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 09:33 PM BST

This wonderful, short film by Josh Reynolds, was filmed in Cornwall. The music was written and performed by Richard back in the spring of 2010. Here it is in its entirety.

    BBC1 Penguin Logo
    Wednesday, February 20 2008 @ 02:20 PM GMT

Richard's ukulele playing is now the soundtrack to BBC1's latest on-air logo.  He used four ukes and an electric bass to record the ditty behind the BBC's familiar  skating penguins.

The music was written for leading TV music company Yellow Boat Music. And no mention of George Fornby please. he played the banjolele. Like the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain Richard plays the guitar shaped ukulele...

Just click on that giant penguin to see a clip.

    A Very English Village
    Monday, January 08 2007 @ 10:12 AM GMT

Luke Holland's remarkable TV series "A very English village" is currently being shown on BBC2. The series, part of the award winning BBC Storyville strand, takes us beyond the postcard gloss of England's rural idyll in the ancient Sussex village of Ditchiling, Sussex.

The music for the series was composed and recorded by Richard Durrant. Many of the peices used can be found on Richard's "Music from the Colourdome" album. The album is available in CD or download formats by clicking here - or from UK record shops. A medley of music used in the series will be available from the LongMan Records shop from 18th Jan.

    A Very English Village
    Monday, October 10 2005 @ 02:04 PM BST

Sussex based artist and film maker Luke Holland has recently completed work on his five part television series "A Very English Village". The series is currently being broadcast on BBC4 and will move to BBC2 later this year. The music for the series was composed by Richard Durrant, who performs on guitars and cello as well as contributing tracks from his latest album "Music from the Colourdome".

The series is a beautifully shot, philosophical study of a village community. Each episode confronts contemporary as well as historical issues against the picturesque backdrop of this ancient Sussex village.

The picture shows Luke outside The Sandrock in Ditchling.  Click here for more details about the series.

    Scrapheap Banjo Challenge
    Monday, November 08 2004 @ 11:52 AM GMT

Channel 4's "Scrapheap Challenge" can now be added to the recent worldwide list of R Durrant tracks being used for TV programmes. This week's teams assembled their creations to the accompaniment of Richard's banjos and mandolins which was nice for Richard and son Django who, rumour has it, are fans of the programme.

Eastenders also used Richard's music - ironic as the Durrant TV set is banned from showing soaps...
