The old Airport Club
The Airport Club at Shoreham Airport first opened in 1996 as a "happening" all of its own. Set up and run by Richard Durrant it was sustained by the support of the local community and the contributions of the artistes and musicians who appeared there each month during the open mic format.

In September 2007, following the opening of Shoreham's wonderful, new Ropetackle Arts Centre, Richard relaunched the Airport Club. It has run ever since with monthly shows on the second Friday of each month between September and May.
The club has grown into its smart new surroundings and has a radical new appearance thanks to the wonderful visual content supplied by resident artist Malcolm Buchanan-Dick. Malcolm's life outside the club is as an award winning, internationally recognised artist, but every second Friday of the month he teams up with Richard to help produce the club.
The Story of the Airport Club
The Airport Club met on the last Friday of each month in the Art Deco terminal building of Shoreham-by-Sea's historic airport. Situated adjacent to the main A27 road and directly opposite the imposing Lancing College Chapel built into the Sussex Downs, this wonderful airport is said to be one of the oldest in the world.
With no sense of competition and no evidence of musical or artistic boundaries a unique evening's entertainment somehow came together every month. The guests were whoever turned up, and the running order was decided as Richard picked names from his battered old beaver hat.
With heavy heart Richard closed the club on July 30th 2004 - unable to continue the commitment of running the evening due to the presure of his busy gigging schedule coupled with the fact that the club required a stage, lighting rig and PA to be assembled and taken down every month.

12 years of open mic slots, beautiful music, madness, improvisation, comedy and friendship. Its difficult to sum up what the Airport Club meant to me but last Friday it all came to a close. The Ropetackle was bursting at the seams as Mark Allen, Jack Cryer & band, Mark Collyer, Alistair Mackie, Marianne Hillier-Brook, Mike Rose, Lindsay Field, Fr Marcus and the Durrant children Rooney, Daisy and Django took to the stage. The visuals were unspeakably beautiful (see below) as artist Malcolm Buchanan-Dick played the VJ harmonium for the last time, abley assisted by tech staff Simon and Chris with Bill Hammond on lighting. There's plenty more music to come - just no more Airport Club. Thanks to everybody who contributed over the years.

There are just two solo gigs remaining before Christmas. Both are Candlelit Christmas recitals. First in the beautiful church of St Lawrence, Hungerford on Friday 17th and the next day in the awesome St Bartholomews Church Brighton.

| The Airport Club closes after 12 years |

After much soul searching I have decided to make December this year the last ever Airport Club. The club has existed for over 12 years, starting at Shoreham Airport way back in 1997, closing briefly when work started on the new Ropetackle Arts Centre and then beginning its final run in its new home in 2007. Since 1997 hundreds of musicians, comedians, poets and other artists have performed and I’m eternally grateful to each and every one.
I am closing the club because I feel it has run its natural course and there are now other exciting and equally creative fish to fry. Visual artist Malcolm Buchanan-Dick and I will certainly continue to work together and my close involvement with the Ropetackle Arts Centre will not be affected. The last three Airport Clubs will be remarkable. Here is a taster:
October 9th (this Friday, doors 7pm, show at 8pm, tickets £9 in advance £11 on the door). Featuring the greatest recorder player in the world Piers Adams, world renowned harpsichordist Howard Beach, signed singer songwriter Mike Rosenberg on the eve of his Australian tour, Latin Jazz from Nick de Oliveira & Raul D’Oliveira, duo Barber & Taylor and the talented young Liam & Dylan (Herbie Flowers’ hot tip as the next big thing from Brighton).
November 13th A very special “Club Class” edition with finger food and a slightly more refined atmosphere...Posh dress please! (Doors 7pm, show at 8pm, tickets £12 in advance £15 on the door) Half of Shoreham seem to be getting their best evening wear out for this gig!
Acts include a bigger slice of RD performing excerpts from “The Guitar Whisperer” show, singer Paul Austin Kelly (Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden and La Scala) and percussionist & composer Simon Limbrick (has composed for London Contemporary Dance, the Nash Ensemble, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Endymion Ensemble, played with Ensemble Bash etc etc). We will also be joined by Jack Cyer’s Brighton based community choir – the first choir to perform at an Airport Club. This will be an evening that really should not be missed.
December 11th (Doors 7pm, show at 8pm, tickets £9 in advance £11 on the door). The last ever club will be a seasonal affair with candlelit renaissance guitar music from yours truly and a selection of Christmas songs by myself and others sung by a variety of amazing voices including Mark Allen, Jack Cryer and Lindsay Field. Demolition Sky will perform a special set to celebrate the launch of their debut album on LongMan Records – writer/performers Mark Colyer and Alistair Mackie have been playing at the Airport Club for many years so it is very apt that they should launch their beautiful CD at the very last club. Expect a full on Christmas wig out to close the club with a bang.
This ends with many, many thanks to those who have supported the club over the years. Pictured club regular Mark Allen with RD at the Airport Club. Click here for film of RD performing at the club.

This Friday's Airport Club features a host of talent including a set from the great English songwriter Robin Scott (he of "Pop Music" fame). The club will also be my first gig in two years with the great Mr Herbie Flowers. Herb and I have asked legendary drummer Malcolm Mortimore to sit in with us for the last part of what should be a memorable evening of music. I can't wait to play with Herb again, our shows together have always taught me so much and been such incredible fun. And as for Malc....
As ever Malcolm Buchanan-Dick will be enchancing the performances with his jaw dropping projections created from behind his "VJ Harmonium". Doors are at 7pm with music from 8pm. Tickets £10 from www.ropetacklecentre.co.uk

The Airport Club has existed in some shape or form since 1991. Here is a brief history:
1991 The Swan Inn, South Chailey, Sussex (run by Richard's brother Bill). The club is started and meets on the last Sunday of the month. It is an instant success.
1993 The Giant's Rest, Wilmington, Sussex. Richard and the club move to the village of Wilmington at the feet of the famous chalk figure "the Longman of Wilmington" (the same longman that has a record label named after him). Still on the last Sunday. With Richard's developing solo work the club becomes a huge success and is packed to capacity every month.
1996 The club moves to Bill Durrant's new pub The Newmarket on the A27 just outside Lewes. The Wilmington faithful still attend and the club grows ever bigger. The last Sunday remains unchanged.
1997 By now Richard has well and truly settled in Shoreham-by-Sea (where he moved in 1996) and the airport seems to be the best choice of venue for the club. Initially it's run for the benefit of the Adur Arts Forum, by Richard, on the last Friday of every month. After Richard quits the Arts Forum, and continues the club on his own.
2002 At the moment the Airport Club has never been more popular. The Beach Dreams raffle is now a regular feature (raising funds for a wonderfully succesful community arts organisation related to the Adur Festival).
2004 July of this year saw the last regular club take place. It was a packed night, full of great music and very emotional. It ended in a party back at Richard's with skinny dipping and huge quantities of ale. The club was folded due to Richard's decision to concentrate fully on his solo work. There just wasn't enough time to run the club any more!
